Things to See and Do in Blackball and the West Coast

  • Walk around town with the Blackball History Group's pamphlet to guide you.
  • Go into the old mine's ventilation chimney.
  • Gold panning. We have pans you can use.
  • Visit the Blackball Salami Shop. You can try some samples and then buy what you like.
  • Blackball Bling and Kereru Crafts offer some handmade west coast goodies!
  • Visit the Working Class History Museum next door.
  • Tramp the Croesus track from Blackball to Barrytown or stay overnight at the Ces Clark or Garden Gully hut.
  • Explore the tunnels under the town. You'll need a torch and gumboots.
  • Go helibiking - call Stu on 03 762 6117 for more details.
  • Go up the Moonlight Vallery (4WD required).
  • View the old mine managers house/Blackball Community Centre (which is recorded as the South Islands most haunted building). You can park your camper van there too.
  • See the gold dredge, the biggest in the southern hemisphere.

  • Monteith's Brewery Tour - 20 minutes.
  • Scenic flights to Glaciers.
  • Moana kiwi house, Lake Brunner - 20 minutes
  • On Yer Bike: NZ's Muddiest Offroad Adventures on Quads, Go karts, Hagglunds & Argo! Also Home to Little Earth Model Village, models of historical Waiuta and Reefton. 
  • Shantytown - heritage park modelled after traditional gold mining towns.
